Jack Black reveals name of Tropic Thunder sequel

‘Every time I see Ben Stiller I ask him about it’

Jack Black has revealed what he thinks the title of a Tropic Thunder sequel should be, saying he brings it up “every time” he sees Ben Stiller.

Black and Stiller starred alongside each other in the 2008 satirical action comedy, as actors shooting a war film in the tropical jungle.

Tropic Thunder was an undeniable success both critically and commercially. Along with grossing more than $195m at the global box office, the film received largely positive reviews from critics and Robert Downey Jr. received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor for his performance as Kirk Lazarus.

In the years following its release, fans have been clamouring for a sequel – and it seems like some of the cast are keen as well.

Speaking to JOE, Jack Black, who played Jeff Portnoy in the film, said he mentions a Tropic Thunder sequel “every time I see Ben Stiller” – and he knows exactly what to call it.

You can watch him discuss the Tropic Thunder sequel – and its title – below.

Black said: “Every time I see Ben Stiller I’m like ‘dude come on: Arctic Lightning!’

“That’s the sequel to Tropic Thunder, you go opposites.”

Black isn’t the only former cast member to voice their enthusiasm for another Tropic Thunder project.

Tom Cruise, who played played the role of Les Grossman, is apparently keen to bring his character back in some form, potentially in a new movie or spin-off series.

Black said he had fond memories of filming the original film, but that it was hard work as they had to actually fly out to the tropics of Hawaii to do basic training.

“It was such a fun movie to do but it was hard,” he said.

“You know, we really went out there for basic training and we traveled to the center of Hawaii, the jungles, the deep dark jungles of Hawaii.

“But my God, if you could get that group of people together again, forget about it.”

A fair amount of controversy surrounded the film upon its release though, particularly over its use of disabled people, use of ableist slurs, and Downey Jr appearing in blackface for the film.

And Black is in no doubt that a sequel would get cancelled today, but it “would be worth it.”

He concluded: “It would get cancelled, but it would be worth it. That’s how funny it was!”
