Batman actor Kevin Conroy dies aged 66

Mark Hamill labelled up the ‘definitive Batman’ for several generations

Kevin Conroy, the man who voiced the Batman in the iconic 90s animated series, has passed away at the age of 66.

The actor died on Thursday, November 10, after a short battle with cancer, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed in a statement.

Conroy made his debut as the voice of Batman in 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series, a show now considered one of the greatest animated series of all time.

He voiced the superhero in the show throughout its run from 1992 to 1995 and reprises the role in a number of other movies and shows, including Batman: Mask of the PhantasmSuperman: The Animated SeriesBatman BeyondJustice LeagueJustice League Unlimited and The Killing Joke.

A representative for the star told TVLine: “It is with profound sadness that I send this to you today: Kevin Conroy, the quintessential voice of Batman, and a dear friend to so many of us, has passed away.”

Warner Bros. Discovery paid tribute to the screen icon, saying: “A noted stage, film and television performer, Conroy rose to unparalleled voice acting fame as the title character of the landmark Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1996).

“He would establish never-to-be-broken records as the quintessential voice of Batman, bringing the super hero to animated life in nearly 60 different productions, including 15 films – highlighted by the acclaimed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm; 15 animated series, spanning nearly 400 episodes and more than 100 hours of television; as well as two dozen video games.

“Conroy was also featured as a live-action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse’s 2019-2020 ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover event.

“In recent years, Conroy was a notable fixture on the Con circuit, greeting fans with the same warmth, respect and enthusiasm they reserved for him.”

“Kevin was far more than an actor whom I had the pleasure of casting and directing – he was a dear friend for 30+ years whose kindness and generous spirit knew no boundaries,” said Emmy Award winning casting/dialogue director Andrea Romano.

“Kevin’s warm heart, delightfully deep laugh and pure love of life will be with me forever.”

Mark Hamill was another of those to pay tribute to Conroy, having played the Joker opposite the late actor’s Batman.

He said: “Kevin was perfection. He was one of my favourite people on the planet, and I loved him like a brother.

“He truly cared for the people around him – his decency shone through everything he did.”

Hamill added that for several generations, Conroy was “the definitive Batman” and that he would “always be my Batman.”
