Great news Game of Thrones fans, a prequel is a real possibility

Conor Heneghan

Just what we all wanted to hear.

While Game of Thrones fans can barely hide their anticipation for the seventh season next year, it will also serve as a reminder that the end is in sight for one of biggest and best shows of recent years.

Seasons 7 and 8 have been confirmed as the final two seasons for the HBO epic and both of them will be significantly shorter than what’s gone before as events in Westeros reach what will no doubt be a thrilling conclusion.

The day it ends will be a sad one for the show’s millions of fans worldwide, but there’s good news for those of us who can’t get enough of it, as talks about a prequel have already taken place.

What format a prequel will take is not yet clear, but HBO programming president Casey Bloys confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that they are in talks with Game of Thrones author George R.R Martin about putting a plan in place.

Asked if they had concentrated on any specific idea for a prequel, Bloys replied: “I would say it’s still kind of preliminary ongoing talks.

“There are areas we are exploring, but I wouldn’t point to any one and say, ‘This is what we’re going to do.’”

Bloys also kept fairly schtum about the number of episodes slated for the final season, Season 8, saying, “I’ll take as much as we can get”.

He also didn’t appear to entertain the prospect of the show’s finale being released as a movie, adding: “I want everything I can get for HBO, I’ll just leave it at that”.

Still, the prequel would appear to be a definite possibility and will hopefully be finalised by the time we’re all looking to fill the massive Game of Thrones-shaped void in our lives come 2019 or so.
