Casemiro will miss a large chunk of the end of season run-in

Casemiro was shown a straight red card in Manchester United’s game against Southampton on Sunday.

The Brazilian was given his marching orders for a late challenge on Carlos Alcaraz following a VAR review after referee Anthony Taylor had initially brandished him with a yellow card.

Visibly distraught by the tackle, the former Real Madrid man went over to apologise to Alcaraz before heading down the tunnel.

It’s the second time that the midfielder has been shown a straight red card and is the first Man United player to do so since Nemanja Vidic in the 2013-2014 season.

As a result, the 31-year-old will now miss United’s next four league games against Newcastle, Brentford, Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Usually, when players are shown a straight red, they are given a three-match suspension however given that this is Casemiro’s second dismissal of the season, he is given an extra game ban as punishment.

Despite weakening Erik ten Hag’s side the £70m signing was still given a standing ovation by fans as he left the pitch to chants of ‘Casemiro! Casemiro!’

It follows after his poor display in the 7-0 thrashing against Liverpool last week, with pundit Jamie Carragher not afraid to point out his flaws.

“It really stood out for me because I think he’s been one of the best players in the Premier League this season,” he said.

“Early on, I could see he was just not at the races. He actually gave away with five of his first six passes.”
