Once one of the most feared strikers in world football, George Weah hung up his boots 15 years ago
Since then, he’s opted against going down some of the more traditional career paths of other former professional footballers, deciding to embark on a journey into politics. He appears to be doing pretty well at it too, given that he was sworn in as Liberia’s President in January of this year.
On Tuesday, however, he briefly returned to football, playing for his country in a specially arranged friendly against Nigeria in Monrovia.
The former AC Milan star, who also had brief spells with Chelsea and Manchester City, played for 79 minutes of Liberia’s 2-1 defeat to the Super Eagles in a game organised to retire the number 14 shirt he had worn for his country during the peak of his playing career.

Nigeria had fielded a relatively strong side for the game, with Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi featuring as a second-half substitute. Unsurprisingly, the 51-year-old Weah struggled to make an impression on the match, though did leave the field to an ovation from the crowd with little over ten minutes still to play.
This, we can safely say, was probably the last time we’ll see the former Fifa World Player of the Year take to a football pitch.
