Rodri transfer news: Barcelona decision made after Real Madrid talks fade

Real Madrid had been pushing to sign the midfielder this summer, but they have failed to agree a transfer fee with City.

That delay appears to have opened the door for Barcelona.

According to journalist Gerard Romero, Rodri has now given Hansi Flick's side the green light to complete the move.

Romero made the claim during his Jijantes YouTube show on Thursday: "I can exclusively announce that Rodri will be a new Barcelona player.

"The midfielder gave Barca his final approval this morning and will become the club's newest signing in the coming hours.

"He rejected Real Madrid, didn't want to wait any longer, and will join Barcelona."

Barcelona are now expected to begin talks with City over a transfer fee.

According to RMC Sport, City want around €80 million (£68.5m) for the Spain international.

Barcelona, however, are hoping to strike a deal worth between €60 and €70 million.

Rodri is currently recovering after undergoing minor back surgery last week.

The 30 year-old is spending time on holiday in Ibiza after helping Spain win the World Cup.

Despite returning from a serious ACL injury, Rodri enjoyed a remarkable tournament. However he started only 17 Premier League matches last season.

But he still won the World Cup Golden Ball after being named the competition's best player.

City boss Enzo Maresca played down the transfer rumours earlier this week.

"It's just about speculation at the moment," he said, "Rodri had the surgery last Monday; everything was fine.

"Now, some days off and he'll be back with us when he finishes his holiday."

Maresca also stressed how important Rodri remains to City's plans.

"I said in the first press conference that any manager in the world wants Rodri because he's a top player," he added.

The report comes just months after Rodri admitted he would welcome a return to La Liga.

Speaking to Onda Cero in March, he said: "I'd like to return, yes, obviously.

"For me, La Liga is where I started."
