Martin Zubimendi ‘regrets rejecting Liverpool’ and ‘hoping for January move’

He reportedly opted for Real Sociedad for the ‘food and hikes’

Martin Zubimendi reportedly ‘regrets’ rejecting Liverpool in the summer in favour of staying at Real Sociedad.

He has apparently asked for Arne Slot’s side to try and sign him in January after rejecting their £52million bid to stay in San Sebastian.

The 25-year-old was all set to join the Premier League giants but apparently backtracked after Real Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil reminded him of his love for Basque food and hiking.

Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo first reported the claims he had asked Liverpool to try and sign him again but Estadio Deportivo cites the ‘English media’ as their source.

It is understood that Alguacil held several meetings with Zubimendi, tugging on his heartstrings to stay, referencing how the fanbase would be disappointed if he left.

He also referenced his lifestyle in San Sebastian. Zubimendi enjoys the food options in the Basque region and loves hiking up Mount Ulia.

The midfielder had been Liverpool’s top transfer target after the departure of Fabinho who left for Saudi Arabia in 2023.

However, Ryan Gravenberch has stepped up to the plate and has impressed as a number six.

Real Sociedad find themselves 16th in LaLiga, just a point above the relegation zone in what has been a disappointing start to the season.

For the past five seasons they have finished in the top six, thanks in part to Zubimendi but goals have been scarce so far this year.

Zubimendi has not been offered an improved contract, with his current one up in 2027, which some suggest is a factor in his desire for change.

However, Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay denied that Zubimendi had requested an improved deal.

He told Noticias de Gipuzkoa: “There has been no conversation with Zubimendi to renew the contract. There has not been now and there has not been before. He did not put any conditions on us.”
