LIV Golf has secured a new lead investor to keep the breakaway tour running in 2027, easing fears over its future after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund confirmed it would end its multibillion-pound backing at the close of this season.
The Saudi withdrawal, revealed in April, had plunged the series into doubt just three years after it upended men's professional golf and lured major winners away from the PGA Tour. Chief executive Scott O'Neil confirmed a signed agreement is now in place and has been approved by the LIV Golf board, with the transaction expected to complete in September. No figure was disclosed, though the PIF has poured more than $5bn (£3.71bn) into the venture since its 2022 launch. As BBC Sport reported, the tour will slim down to 10 events next season, five in the United States and five elsewhere.
O'Neil said the new structure would make LIV's players "majority equity holders" in the competition, calling it "a first for a major global sports league". He added that the league is focused on "delivering a great week for fans and players at Bedminster".
The immediate focus is this week's event at Bedminster, with the season's climax still to come. More golf and sport coverage is on JOE's sport desk.
