Gareth Southgate has said he plans to travel to Saudi Arabia to watch Jordan Henderson play in the next few weeks.
Henderson was called up by Southgate for England's international fixtures against Australia and Italy despite playing in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ettifaq.
Southgate is conscious that the quality of the league isn't on par with the European leagues but when asked about his decision to include the 33-year-old, the Three Lions boss said he fly to the Middle East to check up on one of his leaders in the squad.
He said: "His physical data is fine. The games are not at the same intensity as the games here. The heat is part of that. There are two or three drinks breaks per game, which is an indication of the climate, and that his having an impact on how teams play. It is a situation that we are tracking closely. I will go out and watch games.
"We will get to his games the same way we get everybody else’s. That’s a longer trip and in these first couple of months we’ve felt it more important to see as many games live as we can, as quickly as possible, by getting around our country more.
"But as time moves on, we’ll get to more of the Milans, the Madrids and the Bayern Munichs, as well as out to see Hendo."
The England boss' latest comments will cause controversy, with many fans and LGBTQ+ campaigners still angry with Henderson's decision to go to a country where homosexuality is considered illegal among many over human rights issues.
Henderson caused further anger earlier this week after saying he had no contractual obligation to speak up for Saudi Arabia only to congratulate them on their bid to host the 2034 World Cup - which they look set to be awarded.
