Man City were charged with ‘numerous breaches’ of financial rules

Erik ten Hag has refused to be drawn into the saga surrounding their neighbours, Manchester City.

Man City were charged with ‘numerous breaches’ of financial rules by the Premier League and await the verdict of an independent commission.

They’ve been charged with more than 100 breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules after a four-and-a-half year investigation into the club.

The reigning Premier League champions are likely to face sanctions which could range from anywhere between a points deduction to expulsion from the top flight.

Ahead of Manchester United’s game against Leeds on Wednesday, United boss Ten Hag was asked about the latest bombshell, but the Dutchman was only focused on his own team.

“It’s about the match of the Roses,” he said. “It’s definitely a big game in this part of England, it’s a big game for us. We know we have Manchester City and Liverpool, but for our fans this means so much. Our players are aware of that and know what to do.

“I’m really happy with the process at home. It’s great to have that connection at Old Trafford, but when we play away a lot of fans are following us.

“Nothing changes, the pitch is the same size. So in that fact, we can grow. We still have steps to make but happy with that as well.”

A win for the Red Devils will see United move level on points with City and to within five points of top of the table, Arsenal.

Ten Hag will be without his defensive midfield star Casemiro as he begins the first of a three-game ban for an altercation with Crystal Palace’s Will Hughes in the 2-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday.
