The Spanish Court has opened proceedings

Former Barcelona and Brazil international Dani Alves is under investigation over an alleged claim that he sexually assaulted a woman in a nightclub in Spain last month.

The claim came from Catalonia’s Supreme Court after Spanish media reported that a woman had accused Alves of touching her beneath her underwear without consent when in a nightclub towards the end of 2022.

Alves, who now plays for Mexican side UNAM Pumas, has denied any wrong-doing.

A statement from the Court in Barcelona said that it had opened proceedings ‘for an alleged crime of sexual assault as a result of the complaint filed by a woman for events that allegedly occurred in a nightclub in Barcelona last month’.

The 39-year-old also appeared on Antena 3 in which he said that he was at the nightclub with friends, but denied such behaviour.

“I was dancing and having a good time without invading anyone’s space,’ he said. ‘I don’t know who this lady is. How could I do that to a woman? No.”

Full back Alves became the oldest player to play at the World Cup when he captained Brazil in their final group stage game against Cameroon.

He also holds the record for the most career trophies, winning 43 and counting in his time as a player.
