Man takes three-hour train for first date in two years gets stood up

Kieran Galpin

Craig Moffat, a 21-year-old from Edinburgh, travelled 120 miles for a date with a girl he met on Instagram. Craig was kind enough to talk to JOE about his experience.

Clad in a suit and tie, complete with a dapper waistcoat, Moffat treated himself to a first-class train ticket. Because if you’re going to travel that distance, you obviously do it in style- which Moffat did. He decided to document this occasion on TikTok.

“I can’t wait, I am so excited,” starts the TikTok, though the ending is probably far from what this single-pringle was expecting.

He had been single for two years and, having been introduced to a girl through friends, decided to reach out. “We hit it off,” He tells us, thinking back through the months he was talking to her.

“We were talking for about 2 months. And for the last two, maybe three weeks. We were FaceTiming every night. If not every second night.”

Having arrived in Aberdeen, Moffat went to the restaurant to wait for his date. But thirty-five minutes later, and she was still a no show. He continued to film while he waiting, with both the main course and dessert arriving. But still no date. With only his chicken strips and alcohol to keep him company, Craig turned to every singletons best friend- shots!

“I guess I’ll just head home; I was really looking forward to tonight,” ends the video.

Moffat could not have predicted what would happen next. The TikTok, which narrates arguably an upsetting time for him, now has 4.3m views and just under 700k likes. “I didn’t realise the video would blow up like that. I’m still a bit overwhelmed about it all.”

If the story was not heartbreaking enough, Moffat discovered the girl he thought he had a connection with had ghosted him entirely.

“I found out she blocked me while I was at the restaurant. While I was waiting, I tried to call her. It went straight to voicemail. My texts didn’t send, so when I went to message her on Instagram. I couldn’t find her account….”

Two days later and there is still no word from his mystery woman. Though the situation is terrible, Craig says the response has helped to cheer him up. It illustrates just how much good there is in the world.

Craig is not quite ready to get back out there, probably because he is still hungover from those shots, but he is optimistic about the future. Perhaps one of his new fans will be the girl for him; after all, they already appreciate just how much effort he puts in.
