VIDEO: The spectacular moment a man fires a gun at himself while underwater

Balls of steel

Simon Lloyd

Ever wondered what would happen if a gun was fired under water? Wonder no more…

Physicist Andreas Wahl has conducted an experiment to find out what would happen when he pulled the trigger on a rifle that was submerged under water. And just to make things even more interesting, he chose to stand directly in the firing line.

Wading in a swimming pool just a few metres from the rifle, Wahl uses the a rope to pull the trigger.

The slow motion video below shows the bullet burst out of the barrel before the resistance of the water rapidly causes it to lose momentum and sink to the bottom of the pool before it reached Mr. Wahl.

It’s an interesting watch, but we’re in no rush to start trying this experiment out ourselves.
