She even called her films 'dreadful'

Claiming that she was not surprised by his rape conviction, Lorraine Kelly condemned those around Russell Brand as shameful on ITV on Friday.

Russell Brand's conviction marked "a total fall from grace", Kelly said, as she spoke during a discussion with guest Lucy Cave on her ITV show.

This week, a jury found Brand guilty of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others.

She was not surprised by the verdict, Kelly said, as he pointed out they had both met Brand personally.

The people who surrounded him had been "shameful" for allowing his conduct to continue unchecked, she added.

Lorraine Kelly reaction to Brand's rise in Hollywood

Cave traced Brand's career back to Big Brother's Big Mouth, where she first met him.

Later, he found fame as a television and radio presenter, then major stardom in Hollywood.

Brand appeared in films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Arthur, which Kelly called "dreadful."

According to Cave, Brand had effectively become famous for his own persona rather than for any single role.

"That was almost something that people used in his defence," she said. "It was like, 'that's just Russell'."

Why Brand's conduct was no secret, Kelly says

She recalled that Brand had spoken openly about his behaviour with women during his years of fame.

She told Cave: "It was like the worse he behaved, the more famous he became."

"He went through women, if you like... Shall we say promiscuous?" Kelly added.
