High streets across the UK are set to lose dozens more stores as another major retailer begins a large-scale round of closures.

The British Heart Foundation has now confirmed the first 87 branches that will shut their doors.

The charity, which currently operates 652 shops nationwide, said the decision comes as rising costs and changing shopping habits continue to put increasing pressure on its retail business.

According to the organisation, a number of stores are no longer financially sustainable and cannot continue operating.

The first closures will take place over the coming months, but they are only the beginning of a much bigger restructuring plan.

Around 150 shops are expected to close over the next two years, with almost 90 scheduled to shut by March 2027 and the remaining sites following by March 2028.

As part of the overhaul, the British Heart Foundation also plans to restructure the teams that support its retail operations in an effort to cut costs and build a more sustainable business for the future.

The planned closures stretch across the country, affecting branches in locations such as Salford, Eccles, Harlow and Camden.

Chief Executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths said the decision had been incredibly difficult, acknowledging the important role the charity's shops play for staff, volunteers and the local communities they support.

She said the organisation understands how upsetting the news will be for everyone affected and thanked employees and volunteers for their dedication over the years.

Griffiths explained that the charity is having to navigate an increasingly difficult retail landscape, adding: “Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment.”

The British Heart Foundation said it will support employees throughout the process and, wherever possible, offer opportunities to move into other roles within the organisation.

Volunteers affected by the closures will also be encouraged to continue their work at nearby British Heart Foundation shops where suitable vacancies are available.
