BREAKING

The Democrats have won the Senate and the House in the US midterm elections, as they take control of Congress for the rest of Donald Trump's presidency.

In a resounding and historic victory for the Democratic party, they will flip control of both the House and Senate, CNN projects.

The Democrats, according to CNN, capitalised on President Donald Trump’s historic unpopularity to win a major victory and significant power to check his final two years in office.

Following the results, Trump congratulated the party as he dialled into Fox News to discuss his reaction, saying they “did a good job”.

“We had tremendous rallies. I'm a little bit surprised”, Trump told Fox News.

As he admitted defeat, Trump said that there were “many, many things” that he could work with Democrats on in Congress.

However, he ruled out making any changes to his cabinet in spite of the midterm results.

Trump also told The New York Times he will accept the November 3 election results, shutting down questions about whether he would challenge the outcome.

Notable Democratic wins in the US midterm election

Democrats picked up a string of surprise victories in Republican strongholds in the Senate race, including Texas, Ohio, and Kansas.

Kansas last elected a Democrat almost 100 years ago.

On the other hand, with control of Congress, Democrats will be able to frustrate President Trump's plans for the next two years.

According to the BBC, Democrats could even try to impeach Trump for a third time.

As per CNN, James Talarico is expected to win a Texas Senate seat, which has eluded Democrats for 38 years, Adam Hamilton will win in deep-red Kansas and Annie Andrews will replace Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina.
