‘He would be a Prime Minister for the few not for the many’
Former Chancellor of the Exchequer and would-be Tory leader Rishi Sunak has admitted to not having any working class friends in a resurfaced video clip.
Just days after Sunak announced his intentions to enter the race to become the new leader of the Conservative party following current Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s recent departure plans, a short clip from an old BBC documentary started doing the rounds on social media.
Taken from 2007’s docu-series Middle Classes – Their Rise and Sprawl, a considerably younger Sunak can be seen discussing his current friend circle – and it’s a bit limited, to say the least.

In the brief clip, Sunak can be heard saying “I have friends who are aristocrats, I have friends who are upper class, I have friends who are working-class…well, not working class.”
Viewers on Twitter were quick to comment on the admission, with many suggesting that it makes him the wrong person to take on the job of Prime Minister.
“When you’re so far removed from the lives of working-class people, you’re incapable of truly understanding the depth of the current economic crisis, let alone capable of solving it,” said writer and Twitter user Taj Ali.

“He would be a Prime Minister for the few not for the many,” added Labour MP David Lammy.
“Just another posh boy; just another multi-millionaire trying to pretend that he cares,” offered another.
“the billionaire is so socially mobile – he has friends in the aristocracy AND the upper class,” joked a third.

After quitting his ministerial job as chancellor on the evening of July 5, Sunak announced his intentions to become the next Tory party leader just a few days later on July 8.
“I’m standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister,” he said in a post uploaded to his Twitter page, accompanied with a video.
“Let’s restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country,” he added, alongside the hashtag #Ready4Rishi.
