Rishi Sunak has announced he is standing to be the next prime minister after Boris Johnson’s resignation yesterday.

He had resigned from his  ministerial post as Chancellor on Tuesday evening, mere moments after Sajid Javid quit as health secretary.

It’s understood he had been hauled up in a Westminster hotel with a strategy team for most of Thursday afternoon.

In the video, the former Chancellor promised to “restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country.”

On Tuesday in his resignation letter, he told Johnson that “the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously”, adding: “I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.”

Leader of the House, Tory MP Mark Spencer tweeted that Sunak would get his full support.

He wrote: “Rishi is the leader that can unite the Party, bring the whole country together and win us that fifth general election victory.

“In serious times we need a person with a proven track record. Rishi gets my full support.”
