BREAKING

Poland's government was alerted to a potential threat against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, prompting an urgent response from the country's security services.

Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister overseeing Poland's intelligence agencies, confirmed on Sunday that authorities had received information about a possible plot against the two politicians.

He warned that officials were not dismissing the threat, saying there was a “high probability” it could be carried out.

“We take this matter extremely seriously,” Dobrzyński said.

Polish authorities yet to reveal details of alleged plot

The announcement came after an emergency meeting involving police officers, security officials and representatives of the Interior Ministry.

Dobrzyński said the initial warning had been received by Poland's state protection service, which then passed the information to the police.

Officials have yet to disclose what the alleged plot involved or identify anyone suspected of being behind it.

Tusk was reportedly informed of the situation early on Sunday morning, according to government spokesman Adam Szłapka, who spoke to Polish media following the announcement.

Szłapka acknowledged that public officials sometimes receive threats, but stressed that this case was particularly alarming. He described the reported threat as “exceptionally concerning”.

Dobrzyński also highlighted a broader problem facing the country's security services, saying they were seeing an increase in the number and range of threats reported each month.

Poland on edge amid security concerns

The investigation comes during a period of heightened concern over public safety in Poland.

Officials are already dealing with a spate of violent incidents at schools, while authorities remain alert to the possibility of Russian attempts to destabilise the country.

Central Poland's Mazovia province experienced three school attacks over a four-day period this week. The incidents left one person dead and many others injured, including children.

Alongside these domestic security concerns, Poland is also wary of a potential Russian hybrid operation intended to weaken Western backing for Ukraine as the country continues to resist Russia's full-scale invasion.
