Nato member shuts airports after Russian strikes in Ukraine

Multiple airports have been closed due to 'military operations' in Poland's airspace

Airports in Lublin and Rzeszow have been shut "due to operations of military aviation", according to the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency.

The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces confirmed that these operations were "in connection with strikes carried out by the Russian Federation using jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles on the western territory of Ukraine".

It added: "Ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance systems have reached a state of readiness.

"These actions are of a preventive nature and are aimed at securing airspace and its protection, especially in areas adjacent to threatened regions."

This is the third time Poland has scrambled its airforce this week in response to Russian strikes on Ukraine.

Just last week, a Russian strike hit a train near the Polish border, close to another train carrying European diplomats, including former UK prime minister Boris Johnson.
