Donald Trump has hinted that he wants an ocean named after him before leaving office, suggesting the Atlantic or Pacific could be renamed the “Trump Ocean”.
The US president made the comments while campaigning in Clarksville, Tennessee, where he appeared alongside Republican Senator Bill Hagerty and gubernatorial candidate Marsha Blackburn ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
Trump spent part of the speech discussing Iran, describing its leaders as “crazy” and claiming their public statements had become less aggressive following US military action.
“They don't talk that way anymore, by the way,” he said, recalling threats previously made by Iranian officials.
He also claimed that the country's military had suffered extensive losses, telling the crowd that 159 Iranian ships had been sunk and its air force and air-defence systems destroyed.
“They have no Navy. They have no Air force, they have no anti-aircraft equipment,” Trump said.
But the speech took an unexpected turn when he began discussing geographical names, starting with the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump suggested that the waterway could one day be called the “Trump Strait” before turning his attention to the possibility of renaming an entire ocean.
The idea follows his previous decision to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.
Now, he appears to be considering whether other major geographical features could also receive a new name.
“We need a river. We need an ocean,” Trump told the audience, floating the names “Trump Ocean” and “Ocean of the Americas” for either the Atlantic or Pacific.
“Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean,” he added.
