Pope Leo reveals health update

Pope Leo XIV is preparing to undergo an operation after a routine medical examination revealed a small nodule on his lung, with doctors recommending its removal.

The 71-year-old pontiff disclosed the findings during Sunday's Angelus prayer in St Peter's Square, where he addressed the pilgrims gathered for his weekly appearance.

Leo said: “During some check-ups, doctors discovered a localized nodule on my lung.”

He continued: “It was detected at a very early stage and is well-defined. The doctors deem it advisable to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it.”

The operation is expected to take place early next week. Although the pope referred to the procedure happening in the “coming days”, a Vatican spokesman subsequently clarified the anticipated timing.

According to the Vatican press office, Leo will need approximately a week in hospital to recover.

Officials have not yet shared any additional information about the nodule, the surgery or his condition.

Vatican is yet to clarify future travel plans

The announcement comes despite the pope having no previously known health issues.

The American pontiff is also known for keeping active, regularly playing tennis and swimming during stays at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.

Attention is now turning to whether the operation could affect his upcoming international commitments.

Leo is scheduled to embark on a major trip from 6 to 17 November, with visits planned to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.

The Vatican has not confirmed whether his surgery or recovery period will lead to any changes to the itinerary.
