India’s disaster response agency has been rushed in to help a 10-year-old boy who had fallen down an 80ft well with snakes and scorpions.

Rahul Sahu fell down the colossal well on Friday, June 10, while playing in the garden in the state of Chhattisgarh, India.

Four days later and the boy is still stuck, with rescuers attempting to dig a tunnel to free him. Fresh air is being funnelled into the tunnel.

According to India Today, a robotic team from Gujarat was also employed to assist in the recovery.

But various circumstances have made the rescue attempt difficult. Rahul is deaf and mute, and poor weather has only added to the complications. Moreso, snakes and scorpions unearthed by machines have put Rahul in more dance.

Around 150 workers have joined the rescue mission alongside army soldiers and members of India’s disaster response agency.

“Since the boy cannot speak or listen, we have a bigger challenge,” said Janjgir district police chief Vijay Agrawal, adding that he is “responding well” to rescuers.

“The rescue operation is still on. Pulling out the boy will take some more time as a stone was discovered while drilling the ground,” Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel tweeted in Hindi. “However, the voices of NDRF Jawans, resonating around the borewell for the last three days, continue to be Rahul’s hopes.”

He added: “At 5am today, he ate a banana.”

At the time of writing, there are no updates on the situation.
