Filming has wrapped on a three-part Christmas special of the hit BBC show The Other Bennet Sister, BBC Wales' Angharad Thomas reports.
Inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the first series — filmed largely in Wales — attracted 7.3 million UK viewers in its first four weeks, while also having huge success in the US and Canada and on social media. Welsh actress and Gavin and Stacey creator Ruth Jones plays the "iconic" Mrs Bennet, with Richard E. Grant as her husband.
On Monday the show's TV producer, Edoardo Ferretti, told fans on social media that the special had finished filming. "And yet another wrap! Every time emotional, every time proud. This one is going to be so special!" he posted on Instagram.
The series is based on Janice Hadlow's novel of the same name, and its 10 episodes follow Mary Bennet — the couple's seemingly unremarkable middle daughter, played by Call the Midwife and Bridgerton actress Ella Bruccoleri — as she navigates the societal pressures of Regency England. Three 30-minute Christmas episodes were confirmed in June after the success of the first run.
The special was produced by Cardiff-based Bad Wolf and shot over the summer, again primarily in Wales. The first series used locations including Merthyr Mawr in Bridgend, the Gower peninsula near Swansea and Brecon in Powys, mid Wales. Jones has said the series was "one of the happiest jobs" she had ever done, adding: "I love coming back to Wales."
Fans in Ferretti's comments said they were "so excited" and "can't wait to see Mr and Mrs Hayward on screen", while Swansea-born Doctor Who writer Russell T. Davies added that he "can't wait". One called the show "like a warm cosy blanket on a snowy winter day". It is a happier BBC story than the beloved BBC show axed after 50 years, and lands as the corporation confirms Top Gear's return to BBC screens after a four-year hiatus.
