The Day After Tomorrow, the blockbuster movie in which climate change brings about a new ice age, just turned 20 years old a couple of weeks ago.
That said, some sort of sequel is in the works, according to its director Roland Emmerich - who JOE recently interviewed about his new Prime Video Ancient Rome-set historical epic series Those About to Die.
During the chat, we asked the filmmaker if he would ever consider making a sequel to The Day After Tomorrow - given the success of the original and how its themes regarding climate change continue to resonate.
In response, Emmerich told us: "I have a project called Exodus."
When we asked if this would be connected to the 2004 disaster flick, he responded:
"It feels like in so far, yes. It's about, you know, that certain areas of this world you cannot live there anymore because they become too hot and all the animals die and people have to move away.
"And it's about more the refugee crisis which we all face."
As for the project's progress, Emmerich added that the script is currently being worked on.
You can watch a clip of the director making these comments below.
Emmerich also spoke to JOE about how his new series Those About to Die was inspired by Gladiator, which you can read about here.
