Donald Trump has called off planned Iran strikes, telling the world he cancelled an imminent attack "subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL". In a post on Truth Social on Saturday evening, the US president said the agreement would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran's nuclear threat, adding that the decision had been taken alongside Israel.
The announcement, the BBC reported, came amid US media reports that Washington had been preparing new, intense strikes on Iran over the weekend. Multiple sources earlier told CBS News, the BBC's media partner in America, that the US and Israel were planning one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date against Iranian energy infrastructure. It followed a phone call in which Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman voiced concern about the conflict escalating, and marks the latest twist in a standoff that has kept the Middle East and the rest of the world on edge.
The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran... Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to.
Donald Trump, Truth Social
Iran had not responded to Donald Trump's latest headline-grabbing intervention at the time of writing, leaving the fragile de-escalation hanging on whether a deal can be struck "rapidly" as Trump demands.
