Stars rally behind Macklemore at Palestine benefit show

Macklemore’s Free Palestine benefit shows have wrapped up in London, with the rapper taking over OVO Arena Wembley for the final date alongside guests including Greta Thunberg and Paloma Faith.

The concert marked the end of a three-city run that also included Dublin and Paris.

Macklemore organised the events after being removed from Ed Sheeran’s US tour following his outspoken support for Palestine.

Sheeran later addressed the decision, saying it had come from the tour’s promoters, who he claimed were facing threats from venues to pull the shows.

The situation led to several other musicians dropping out of the tour in solidarity with Macklemore, sparking widespread reaction online.

'This is a story of equality for all human beings'

The Wembley event had also attracted political opposition. Fifty members of the House of Lords had urged the government to stop the concert from going ahead, a move Macklemore referenced during his set.

“Regardless of what the 50 Lords have to say, this is a story of equality for all human beings around this earth,” he told the audience.

The rapper had previously explained his decision to speak publicly on the issue in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying: “It was more uncomfortable for me to stay silent than to say something.”

Thunberg was among those appearing at the show, delivering a speech that praised Gaza’s resilience and called on people to continue campaigning.

NME reported that she told the crowd the occupation “will not end by philanthropy and slogans”.

Canadian-Palestinian singer Nemahsis also took the stage. She spoke about losing her record deal in 2023 after expressing support for Palestine, telling concertgoers: “My existence is the strongest form of resistance.”
