Can animals accurately predict earthquakes?

JOE

Authorities in one Chinese city are turning to a variety of animals in an attempt to forecast earthquake risks.

Zoo employees in the city of Nanjing are monitoring the behaviour of pigs, chickens and other animals in an effort to predict natural disasters ahead of time, as the animals are thought to be able to sense disturbances better than humans.

The new methods are inexpensive, relying largely on the vigilance of employees rather than any new technology, so it could be seen as an example of the city making the most of its poultry resources.
