Fans mourn end of an era as Xbox 360 Marketplace shuts down after 19 years

‘RIP Xbox 360. Thank you for the memories’

Gamers have been saying goodbye to the Xbox 360 Marketplace, which has shut down permanently almost two decades after it launched.

Arriving alongside the Xbox 360 in November 2005, the gaming store became a familiar destination for gamers across the world as they looked to buy and download games for the console.

Whilst players can still access and download purchases made through the storefront, no new purchases can be made.

This means that a long-list of games that were only available on Xbox 360 Marketplace are now gone forever.

With the closure of the storefront, this is effectively the end of the Xbox 360 and is truly the end of an era.

In a post on X, former employee Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb, who regularly posted about sales and updates for the Xbox 360 Marketplace and became the face of Xbox for many, wrote: “Almost 19 years on, all good things must come to an end.

“It was my pleasure sharing all the thousands of marketplace sales and updates I’ve given over the years. Thank for having fun, playing fair and filing feedback.”

Plenty of other gamers took to social media to pay tribute to the Xbox 360 Marketplace era.

One user uploaded a video of more than 30 minutes of the store interface, writing: “RIP Xbox 360. Thank you for all the memories.”

Another said it was the “end of an era,” whilst someone else ‘saluted’ the store.

Others paid tribute to the Xbox 360 console, labelling it “wonderful” and “the king.”

So long Xbox 360. You’ll never be forgotten.
