London pub is giving away free dinner and a pint on Christmas Day for anyone that’s lonely

Paul Moore

A wonderful act of compassion. Superb.

Despite the fact that we’re still in November, there’s no denying that the marketing machine is in full swing as the Christmas adverts make their way onto our TV screens.

While the various adverts offer a fleeting sense of happiness and escapism from everyday life, the holiday season can be tough for anyone that’s homeless, lonely or less fortunate than those who can enjoy Christmas with their families.

That’s always worth remembering.

As is their regular tradition, the Alexandra on Wimbledon Hill Road, Wimbledon will be doing their bit to help others by giving away free turkey dinners and pints on Christmas day for anyone that’s on their own.

There are no strings attached.

The pub state that absolutely nobody is going to be turned away from their premises. This extremely kind offer is available for everyone to avail of, regardless of age, gender or circumstance.

The Alexandra believes that “our little gesture is just a way of hopefully getting them (lonely people) to have a bloody good day as opposed to an awful one.”

Here’s their statement in full:

“I’ve been asked by a few people now if we are doing the “free meal for anyone who is on their own” thing on Christmas day this year. The answer is that of course we are, and we’re doing it exactly the same as last year. There are no tricks, hidden marketing swerves or strings, it’s quite simple. If you are going to be on your own for whatever reason on Christmas day, come over and we’ll give you a Christmas dinner and pint/glass of wine for free.

Free means free, once you’ve eaten it and drank it you can toddle off home if you want, you are not obligated 1% to buy anything at all. We don’t want your email address, it doesn’t matter if you never set foot in the pub again and never came here before, as long as you leave here happier than you would have been if you hadn’t walked in on Christmas day, we’ve done our bit.

If you know someone who might be on their own, let them know. If you live miles away, consider maybe bobbing round to a neighbor or relatives house near you for 20 minutes at Christmas, have a glass of wine or beer with them and have a laugh. You going around might very well be the highlight of their day. Do something good for somebody this Christmas, it’s kind of the whole point when it comes down to it.

Here’s hoping that this spirit of compassion, kindness, and decency continues to spread around the UK during the Christmas season.

Fair play to all of those involved at the Alexandra.

If you know anyone that could avail of this free meal and drink, let them know.
