Turns out we’re all hooked on flavours from the subcontinent… doused in cheese
New polling suggests a curry served with a side of bacon and cheese would delight the nation’s taste buds the most – proving once again that we are an island of eclectic culinary preferences.
Known internationally as the land of roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, Britain’s gastronomic heritage has the ability to amaze those coming from far-flung places, not least this American woman, who branded British food ‘unseasoned trash’ after a Wetherspoons visit.
Now, new polling has confirmed what many already knew about the country’s food preferences – suggesting we are battling with somewhat of an identity crisis.
A list of the 25 greatest flavours voted for by Brits found that cheddar cheese took pole position, followed by curry and bacon in second and third places respectively.
Tikka masala also ranked high up in the list, although it doesn’t compete with strawberries and cream, which remains a stalwart for 47 per cent of people.
The study found smoked salmon, pork crackling and smoked paprika are also flavours favoured by many.
Also on the list were fizzy cola bottles, Greek yoghurt, parmesan cheese and maple syrup.
The research was commissioned by Pukka to celebrate the launch of its new World Flavours range.
Rachel Cranston, Head of Brand Strategy at Pukka, said: “Our research shows that the nation’s taste buds are craving adventure and flavour, and we’re seeing more hunger for diverse and spicier flavours.
“This range is all about bringing iconic tastes to the UK and we’re confident that every bite has the full-on flavour the nation is looking for.”
