It’s been in on the cards for quite some time, but finally Funk Flex has managed to get Royce Da 5’9″ up to his Hot 97 studio to spit a freestyle.
Heavy on the promotional run for his new album as part of the duo PRhyme with super producer DJ Premier, it only made sense that Royce stop off at the New York radio station to lay down a few bars – and by a few I mean 11 minutes worth.
Flex’s freestyle show, that has included performances from lyrical juggernauts such as Loaded Lux, Murda Mook, Black Thought, CyHi The Prynce, and more, is one of the most popular freestyle series out right now. With that said, fans have long been requesting he get Royce Da 5’9″ up there, being that he’s one of the most talented lyricists in rap (and one of the only MCs who can legitimately keep up with Eminem).
Before even pushing play on the clip it was obvious it was going to be special. However, if you’re looking for the theatrics that some MCs rely on to get their point across then this isn’t for you. This is a thinking persons freestyle. You’ll probably need to watch it at least 10 times just to absorb the first part of it.
Accompanied by DJ Premier on the ones and twos, a Nas instrumental, and Flex screw-facing at every opportunity he can, Royce proves in this freestyle that he is a superior MC.
With lines like, “I stand the test of time like the leaning tower of Pisa,” and, “Tell your wife she gonna be solo soon like Swae Lee,” you know it’s about to be a problem.
