David Letterman was subject of the ultimate tribute on his last ever Late Show appearance - an animated Simpsons clip...

The legendary host is hanging up his mic after over three decades of service and his very last opening monologue featured Marge and Homer acknowledging his longevity.

The Simpsons' characters are seen making a wry reference to fact that none of them have aged a day during their own record-breaking run.

"Gosh Homie, Dave’s been on the air for 33 years. Back then, Bart and Lisa were kids and Maggie was still a baby," comments Marge, as the camera pans to their evergreen (yellow?) offspring.

A fitting tribute from one American institution to another...
