The original cast are reportedly set to return
The Goonies is reportedly finally getting a reboot, nearly 40 years after the original was released.
The classic film from 1985 was based on a story by Steven Spielberg, and followed a group of kids who lived in the Goon Docks in Oregon, who go on an adventure to find the lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy.
However, it seems fans are about to get a second instalment of the film, with reports claiming it could hit screens within the next couple of years.
A source told The Sun: “The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead.
“The plan is to start developing the ideas for the follow up next summer, with a possible release date of 2026 or 2027.
“The original is so culturally significant, Warner Bros’ know they have to get it totally right.
“It’s likely major stars will come back but the possibilities of where to take the sequel are endless.
“The team who are going to be starting work on the project are so excited.
“It is early days but the youth adventure market is on fire, so they want to capitalise on this.
“The Goonies is 39 years old now and the idea that they can bring the magic of the film to a whole new audience has the team very excited.”
The original film starred Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, and Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan. It also starred Jeff Cohen, who is now an entertainment lawyer.
Fans have responded to news of the potential reoot, and not everyone is excited.
“We all know they’re going to f**k it up. They always do,” one person wrote.
A second put: “There are no original ideas in Hollywood any more. None.”
Another wrote: “Noooooooooo. Didn’t they learn nothing from Sandlot 2?”
