The Russo Brothers are bringing another very nerdy property to the screen for Netflix

For those who weren’t cool enough for Pokemon cards

Imagine you are one (or both) of the Russo Brothers. You have just directed two Captain America and two Avengers movies for Marvel. They are some of the biggest films ever. You are the toast of the nerd world. You can probably do whatever the hell you want to next.

So what is your next project?

On Monday, it was announced, out of the blue, that Joe and Anthony Russo were teaming with Netflix for an animated series based on super-nerdy collectable card game Magic: The Gathering.

The brothers will serve as executive producer on the series, as well as overseeing “the creation of an all-new storyline” based on the franchise.

According to Netflix, the show will “expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains, as they contend with stakes larger than anyone world can hold.”

If that is all gibberish to you, Magic is a fantasy-themed card game set in a world of battling wizards called Planeswalkers.

The card game was launched in 1993 to great success – it has over twenty million players, and twenty billion Magic cards have been produced.
