Nicolas Cage is becoming a big star all over again

Nicolas Cage is set to star in sequels to two of his most iconic roles after becoming an in demand actor for live-action films all over again.

The Hollywood icon has had something of a renaissance in recent times, with his performance in Pig receiving rave reviews from critics.

It has a 97 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay and earned Cage a second nomination for the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actor.

Pig stars Cage as a truffle-hunter who lives alone in the Oregon wilderness and and must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped after a gang of violent intruders break into his home.

The Hollywood Reporter suggested that after years of making indies, the actor is in demand for live-action studio films for the first time since 2011’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

And it also means we may finally get to see him return to a couple of his most successful roles, with sequels to two absolute bangers on the cards.

Face/Off came out in 1997 and saw Cage play ruthless terrorist Castor Troy, who is hellbent on destroying FBI agent Sean Archer’s life. Archer is played by John Travolta.

Basically, it’s two hours of Cage and Travolta swapping faces and trying to kill each other.

The Guest director Adam Wingard is set to helm the sequel, and told Empire “we saw this as a Nicolas Cage movie.”

He continued: “A couple of years ago, the studio maybe would have wanted a hot, young, up-and-coming actor or something.

“Now, Nicolas Cage is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood again.”

The National Treasure series hit cinemas in 2004, with the second movie, Book of Secrets, released three years later.

Cage plays code-breaking historian Ben Gates, who spends his time uncovering dangerous secrets and searching for buried treasures.

The franchise is set to return with a Disney+ series entitled National Treasure: Edge of History, with Lisette Alexis in the lead role – but a third movie could also be on the cards with Cage returning as Gates.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Comicbook: “We’re working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it’s really good. So I think we’ll get it to him shortly.”

The Hollywood Reporter claims the success of Pig is Cage’s ‘cash cow’ and allowed him to command $4 million to star in them.
