A severely overlooked crime thriller movie is airing on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It’s a real hidden gem.

Our TV movie pick for tonight (Saturday, April 20) is The Trust, a severely overlooked 2016 crime thriller starring Elijah Wood and Nicolas Cage.

It centres around a pair of cops (played by Wood and Cage) who, bored with their jobs and struggling financially, hatch a plan to rob a vault full of drug money.

As often with films like this, however, proceedings do not go according to plan.

Also featuring amongst its cast Ethan Suplee, Jerry Lewis and Sky Ferreira, The Trust was the debut movie from music video directing duo Alex and Benjamin Brewer.

In the years since, Benjamin Brewer would go on to co-write the screenplay for the Benicio del Toro-starring crime thriller Reptile. He also directed this year’s acclaimed action horror Arcadian, for which he re-teamed with Cage.

We’d recommend their earlier collaboration, however, as The Trust’s stylish filmmaking, dark comedy elements and twisty plot should have received more love upon release.

The Trust is airing on TV on Saturday night/Sunday morning at 1am on the channel Legend.

If you miss the hidden gem when its airing though, it is also available to rent for just €0.99 on Apple TV+.
