Just Cage doing what Cage does best
A newly-released trailer for the highly-anticipated Renfield has given viewers a first look at Nicolas Cage as Dracula.
The Hollywood star, of Con Air and Face/Off fame, stars in the horror movie which features Dracula’s henchman, Renfield, as he battles with what life would be like without serving his dark master.
The modern-day take on the Bram Stoker classic is set to be one of the most hotly anticipated releases of the year, promising interesting and fun twists on the original storyline.
In the opening scenes of the trailer, Renfield rocks up to a self-help group and tries to articulate what his very abnormal, supernatural, and incredibly possessive boss is like to a bunch of normal folks.
But it becomes apparent very quickly that even though the film will focus on Renfield, there’s no keeping Cage out of the spotlight.
His portrayal of the pointy-toothed, blood-sucking, Transylvanian vampire looks to be completely on-point, bringing the actor’s bombastic characteristics to the role.
American filmmaker Chris McKay is at the helm of the horror-comedy monster movie, and will direct a stellar cast made up of Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina and more.
Cage explained to Empire: “When I got a sense of where McKay wanted to go, I realised the movie has a comedic, pop art attitude.
“So I thought: ‘This will be a pop-art Dracula.’ Warhol did a great black-on-black Dracula. This is in that Warhol vein.”
Renfield hits cinemas on April 14, 2023.
