Marlon Wayans rips into cancel culture and says movies like White Chicks are needed

‘I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-ass people’

Marlon Wayans has rubbished cancel culture and rejected criticism of his iconic film White Chicks.

The 2004 American comedy, staring Wayans and his brother, Shawn Wayans, as two FBI agents who go undercover as women by using whiteface to solve a kidnapping plot, is often brought up when in discussions about political correctness and many say there’s no way it could be made today. The film made a lot of money, but was nominated for five Razzies, including Worst Picture.

Wayans recently spoke out about the movie to Buzzfeed, saying movies like White Chicks deserve a place in Hollywood.

“I don’t know what planet we’re on, where you think people don’t need laughter, and that people need to be censored and cancelled,” Wayans told the publisher.

“If a joke is gonna get me cancelled, thank you for doing me that favour.”

When quizzed on White Chicks, which has copped criticism for containing ‘problematic’ themes, Wayans dismissed the question, saying: “I think [films like White Chicks are] needed.”

The actor went on: “It’s sad that society is in this place where we can’t laugh anymore.”

Wayans then hit out at cancel culture and said he refuses to cater to younger, more sensitive audiences.

“I ain’t listening to this damn generation. I ain’t listening to these folks: These scared-ass people, these scared executives,” he told Buzzfeed.

“Y’all do what you want to do? Great. I’m still gonna tell my jokes the way I tell them. And if you want to make some money, jump on board. And if not, then I’ll find a way to do it myself. I know my audience.”

He added: “My audience comes to my shows every weekend and they leave feeling great and laughing.”

Wayans told Buzzfeed that his family always tells “the worst joke the best way”.

Speaking to GQ earlier this year, Wayans said filming White Chicks took its toll on him and his brother, saying they were spending 14 hours a day shooting.

“That movie almost killed us,” he said.

“Seven hours of makeup. We’d work 14 hours after that. It takes an hour to get the makeup off. Shawn and I would get two hours of sleep for, like, 65 days, or 60 days.”
