Margot Robbie to co-produce Harley Quinn spin-off movie

We knew it was coming, but we didn't know she'd have a role off camera, too

Suicide Squad received a bit of a hammering from critics and audiences alike, but most people would agree that Margot Robbie’s interpretation of batshit-crazy supervillain and cosplay stalwart Harley Quinn was one of the movie’s (few) successes.

In fact, she had such a noble crack at playing the anarchy-loving comic book star that a spin-off seemed inevitable somewhere down the line.

And if the latest chatter from The Hollywood Reporter is on the money we might be seeing that movie sooner rather than later.

They report that Robbie has signed a deal with Warner Bros. to develop, star in and produce feature films through LuckyChap Entertainment, which the 26-year-old actress co-owns with Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr. One of those is the Harley movie.

There are no specifics on the other characters expected to feature, although The Hollywood Reporter also wrote earlier this year that any Suicide Squad offshoot for Harley Quinn would likely feature a number of female characters from the DC Universe, rather than being a solo outing. Batgirl and Birds of Prey were just some of the names cropping up back then.

But we can expect for the ambitious Robbie to be an executive producer on the as-yet unannounced film, as well as taking what is almost certain to be the lead role.

The first-look deal further underlines the commitment Warner Bros. is showing to female-led blockbusters. The much-anticipated Wonder Woman movie hits cinemas next year, and the famous studio is also reimagining Ocean’s 11 with a female ensemble cast.
