Wes Craven, the legendary American filmmaker famous for creating the iconic Freddy Krueger, has died of brain cancer.
Craven was an indisputable pioneer of the horror genre whose body of work spanned several decades. As well as creating the Nightmare on Elms Street franchise, he directed the Scream series, the original The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes.
Craven is credited with having inspired many modern horror practitioners, and unsurprisingly many have taken to Twitter to pay their respects to an undeniable maestro of American film.

Craven will be missed by pretty much anyone who has ever enjoyed a horror film.
The fact that Craven shared an unusual first name with the director Wes Anderson also gave us one of the most underrated skits in the history of Saturday Night Live.
