Game of Thrones star claims you’ve been saying her character’s name wrong this whole time

Well now we know...

When the Harry Potter films came out, many of us were thrilled to finally know how to say Hermione’s name without trailing off at the end.

So when the Song of Ice and Fire series was made into the Game of Thrones TV show for HBO, there were plenty of characters whose names needed clarification.

While you could be forgiven for thinking there was a hard ‘Y’ in Tyrion or not knowing where to start with Jaqen H’ghar, it turns out even the most straight forward ones are secretly tricky too.

So says Sophie Turner, aka the actress who plays Sansa Stark, who claims that despite hearing her character’s name for five seasons, we still can’t seem to get it right.

While it might seem like an April Fools’ Day prank at first, when you think back over the show it starts to make sense. Although not everyone in the Game of Thrones universe sticks to the ‘correct’ way of addressing the Lady of the North, there are plenty who do.

We had always assumed the drawn out way in which some characters address Sansa was just due to some overly-posh accents. But author George RR Martin appears to agree with Turner’s version (at around 1.10 below).

At this stage though, pronouncing it any differently feels a bit like being that mate who doesn’t say the “S” at the end of Paris in a desperate attempt to seem cultured.

We think we’ll stick to getting it wrong.
