An unexpected problem arose during the filming of a scene of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it had to do with a tattoo of the film’s star, Tom Holland.
Holland, 30, has the Spider-Man emblem on the bottom of his foot.
The inking appeared in the final shot of a scene where he is hanging upside down naked off the side of a building as the Marvel comics superhero.
The VFX team was then forced to digitally remove the tattoo, it has been revealed.
Speaking at the film’s global fan event at the STRAAT Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands last week, Holland told influencer Taya Miller: “I have a tattoo, and a fun little story is that it's on the bottom of my foot, it's the Spider-Man emblem from the first movie. I have it all across the bottom of my foot.”
“And there's a scene in the movie where I have no clothes on, and I'm hanging off the side of a building. It was very awkward to film.”
“And in the VFX meetings, everyone was like, ‘Yeah, the wires are gone, looks great.’ But you could still see the tattoo on the bottom of my foot”, the actor said.
“They've gotten rid of it now, but there was a time when they were looking at the finished movie, and it was like, ‘No, no, no, we need to paint that out’”, he revealed.
Following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was released in 2021, Spider-Man: Brand New Day sees the world unaware of Peter Parker/Spider-Man's existence.
Holland is the star of the film alongside his wife, Zendaya, 29, and filming the parts was made easier thanks to their real-life relationship.
“There's a very important scene in the film where we were shooting it and I kind of looked across to Zendaya and was like, ‘Do you think this scene is working?’ She kind of looked back at me and was like, 'I don't….’”, Holland told Empire magazine earlier this month.
“If I didn't have the relationship with Zendaya that I have, I would never dream of saying to an actress after her close-up, ‘Do you think this is working?’”, he added.
Meanwhile, the actress suggested that this example showed how much the pair have grown since they first played the parts in Spider-Man: Homecoming, released in 2017.
“What's been really cool about this film, particularly, is, we were much younger, and we weren't as involved (before)”, she said.
“The films were kind of already formed before we started our part of it. But now Tom is incredibly connected to these films in a different way. He's a part of everything, every decision, bringing these characters back to our screens. He is so in tune. You'd struggle to find someone who understands these movies better than he does.”
