Netflix has just cancelled The Boroughs, the new sci-fi show from the Duffer Brothers, the creators of Stranger Things.
The series only premiered four weeks ago. It followed a group of residents at a picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert who discover that something monstrous is stalking the area.
Executive produced by The Duffer Brothers, The Boroughs was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim).
The show had an impressive ensemble cast. This included Alfred Molina (Boogie Nights), Alfre Woodard (Primal Fear), Bill Pullman (Independence Day), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Denis O'Hare (American Horror Story), Geena Davis (The Long Kiss Goodnight) and Jena Malone (Donnie Darko).
Despite this talent and strong reviews - the series holds a near-perfect 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes - Deadline states that Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Boroughs.
The US entertainment outlet said that the news comes as "somewhat of a surprise", given that a season two writers' room had been opened.
Deadline also reports that there was a suggestion to film seasons two and three back-to-back.
The outlet, however, notes that this was before The Boroughs debuted to what it described as "soft ratings".
Deadline implied that this, combined with the show's "high" budget, may have been a factor in Netflix's decision.
The move will come as a shock for some. At the time of its release, The Daily Beast described The Boroughs as a "consistently surprising new-by-way-of-old-school genre affair that appears primed to be the streamer’s next big thing".
