A sequel to Jason Statham shark-fighting extravaganza The Meg is in the works

Jason Statham vs a 70-foot shark. Round 2. Let’s go

We had a blast with The Meg, the Jason Statham-fights-a-big-shark movie, and it seems that audiences did too – at present, it’s the most successful US/Chinese co-production ever with $527.8 million.

And what does Hollywood do when something successful happens? They do it again!

During the US/China Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles, The Meg executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying announced that that a sequel is already in the works.

“That is definitely the plan. It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time,” Ying told Variety.

Deadline have also reported that the sequel doesn’t have any screenwriters yet and that the project isn’t officially greenlit, but given its takings at the box office, this surely can’t be far away.

If you missed The Meg first time around – how did you miss it, it’s 70-foot long? – then here’s a quick synposis: After escaping an attack by what he claims was a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible.

How do you go bigger than a giant, prehistoric shark? That’s for the producers to figure out, but we’re guessing that there will be an even bigger shark, or possibly several equally large sharks.

Or maybe it will be a sombre look at the lonely life of a man who, after confronting his greatest nemesis, realises that he has robbed himself of purpose, and now looks for ways to give his life meaning.

Unlikely. It’s probably the big shark thing again.
