Margot Robbie finally responds to Lady Gaga being cast as Harley Quinn in Joker 2

‘All I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, that gets passed from great actor to great actor’

Margot Robbie has expressed her joy at Lady Gaga being cast to play Harley Quinn in the Joker sequel.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the pop queen would be starring alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deux, the much-anticipated sequel to the critically-acclaimed 2019 film, Joker.

It is widely assumed that Gaga will be taking on the role of the Joker’s love interest, although it has yet to be officially confirmed.

In recent years, it has been Robbie who has played the comic book villain though, having starred as Quinn in both versions of the Suicide Squad films and Birds of Prey.

However, Phoenix’s Joker was set in a different universe to these films, meaning all roles are up for grabs, and that’s if the film’s creators even decide to use DC characters that already exist.

Up until now she has remained silent on the choice to cast Gaga in the role for the 2024 sequel alongside Joaquin Phoenix.

Robbie, Rami Malek, and John David Washington sat down with MTV News’s Josh Horowitz to talk about their new film, Amsterdam.

But the conversation soon turned to Quinn and Robbie was asked how she felt about Gaga as Quinn.

It’s safe to say, she’s delighted with the casting choice.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” the actor told MTV.

“It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing.”

Robbie had announced last year that she was taking a break from the character because of the demanding filming schedule, which included filming 2020’s Birds of Prey and 2021’s The Suicide Squad back to back.

The Aussie went on to say that she has high hopes for Gaga, saying “she’ll do something incredible with it.”

The Folie à Deux title for the Joker sequel is a reference to a medical condition where two or more people start sharing delusions.

Whilst Gaga is confirmed to be have a starring role in the film, it hasn’t been officially confirmed that she will be playing Harley.

But it seems all but certain she’ll be playing the Joker’s love interest.

The sequel is also apparently set to be a musical, which may explain the decision to get one of the biggest voices in music involved in the film.

And Gaga has already worked with the film’s director, Todd Phillips, in A Star Is Born.

On its release in 2019, Joker was a monumental critical and commercial success. The film made more than $1bn at the global box office and was nominated for 11 Oscars.

Phoenix himself picked up both the BAFTA and the Academy Award for best actor as a result of his performance in the film.
