Netflix announced on Wednesday that David Fincher’s follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is officially titled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.
This was confirmed with a ten-second teaser that flashes the title card before cutting to Brad Pitt’s stuntman behind the wheel.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that in a rare move for the streamer, the film gets a proper IMAX run, two weeks globally from 25 November, before it begins streaming on 23 December.
The new film, which is a sequel is set in 1977, eight years after the events of the first film, centres on Cliff Booth coming to terms with a Hollywood that has moved on without him.
Quentin Tarantino wrote the script but handed the camera to Fincher, explaining last year on the Church of Tarantino podcast that he did not want his own final film to be a sequel.
“I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked. It just kind of unenthused me”, Tarantino said.
Pitt produces alongside Ceán Chaffin and leads a cast that includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Peter Weller.
A brief teaser aired during February’s Super Bowl gave Booth the only line anyone has heard so far: “I don’t possess many talents, but I know better than to get in the way of a good story.”
The original, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, took $377m worldwide and won two Oscars from 10 nominations, including Pitt’s first acting win.
Whether a streaming sequel can chase the kind of box office records being set elsewhere this year is a different question.
However, the November IMAX window suggests Netflix fancies its chances.
