Fans call for Christopher Nolan to make horror movie starring Cillian Murphy and Christian Bale

Ryan Price

The Oppenheimer director has already begun writing his next film and has hinted at exploring the horror genre.

Fans on social media have made an argument for Cillian Murphy and Christian Bale to be cast as leads in his next project, especially if Nolan is venturing into the terror realm.

Popular cinema site Discussing Film posted a rumour that The Dark Knight creator has begun writing his next film, just a few days after he picked up the Best Director award at the Oscars.

One of the top comments underneath the post on X mentions both Bale and Murphy as potential leading men in Nolan’s next endeavour.

While both Oscar winners have never been in a traditionally defined horror film, you could argue both 28 Days Later and American Psycho count.

If we’re taking those two masterpieces as examples, nobody could deny that both the Englishman and Irishman would be incredible in a dark and malevolent horror movie created and directed by Nolan.

It would be the 53-year-olds first attempt at tackling a horror flick, but considering each and every one of his big screen creations has been an overwhelming success, we’d be inclined to believe that a change in genre would work out much the same.

If anything, it could propel the director into a whole new arena of praise and worship, considering other auteurs such as Tarantino have never really veered from the genre and formula they excel at.

Fans of Nolan shared their thoughts underneath the original post, with many intrigued by the prospect of a change from the British-American filmmaker.

One user wrote: “Wonder how it would be if he’s trying a new genre. But if he does it, then it would be a masterpiece.”

Another commented: “Nolan doing… Horror???,” followed by a long row of laughing emoji’s.

One other person had absolutely no time for the prospect of Nolan reconnecting with two of his previous collaboraters: “Nah I want Nolan to work with unknown actors.”

Oppenheimer ended up becoming the highest-grossing biopic ever at the box office, in addition to Nolan’s biggest non-Batman movie in the US.

The drama was the biggest winner of last Sunday night’s Oscar, taking home seven in total.

Speaking at the British Film Institute back in February, Nolan said that he was intrigued by the prospect of exploring a new genre.

Speaking as part of a Q&A, he said: “Oppenheimer has elements of horror in it definitely, as I think is appropriate to the subject matter. I think horror films are very interesting because they depend on very cinematic devices, it really is about a visceral response to things and so, at some point, I’d love to make a horror film.

“But I think a really good horror film requires a really exceptional idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that.”

“It’s also one of the few genres where the studios make a lot of these films, and they are films that have a lot of bleakness, a lot of abstraction. They have a lot of the qualities that Hollywood is generally very resistant to putting in films, but that’s a genre where it’s allowable.”
