David Walliams opens up about his sexuality and says he’s ’probably non-binary’

'Sometimes I think my life would be a lot easier if I was just gay'

Walliams has become famous over the years for his camp persona on-screen, whether in his sketch shows, on panel shows or as a judge on Britain's Got Talent.

But he has never come out as gay, and was married to model Lara Stone for five years.

Now, the comedian and children's author has opened up about his gender identity and sexuality during an appearance on Australian podcast Uncomfortable Conversations.

Speaking to host Josh Szeps, Walliams revealed he had "fooled around with guys" in the past, and said he may have understood his identity better if today's language around sexuality and gender had been commonplace when he was growing up.

The Little Britain creator told Szeps: "I think, in a way, I’d probably say I am non-binary, I think. I don’t know exactly."

Recalling his teenage years, Walliams explained that he had a girlfriend at the end of his time at university, but would also "go out to gay clubs and dance for like six hours, and I’d be wearing a skirt and stuff like that."

The 53-year-old continued: "I sort of think, where would I be positioning myself maybe, if I was now 19 or 20?

"Because I went to Bristol University and did a drama degree. And I think that course is where you’re probably... if there’s a group of people who are going to be most interested in that sort of area, most drawn to that area, it’s probably going to be drama students."

When he was asked by Szeps if he had ever "fooled around with guys," Walliams replied: "Yeah, I’d say so. Yeah, so I was always at home with that as well.

"Sometimes I think my life would be a lot easier if I was just gay," he added. "Because I’m really drawn to gay things. I really like gay culture."

Walliams' friend and long-time collaborator Matt Lucas is gay, and he said it was interesting how he is "probably sort of camper" than Lucas.

He finished by saying: "I think probably most – not everybody – but a lot of people probably are somewhere on the kind of spectrum, aren’t they?

"I think men are more wound up about it than girls are."

In 2010, Walliams married Stone, but they divorced in 2015. The pair share an 11-year-old son, Alfred.
