Chandler and Monica’s apartment in Friends costs a shit load more than we could afford

You'll never afford to live there...

Ben Kenyon

It’s probably the most iconic apartment in the world.

Throughout the 90s we grew up watching Friends and that flash-looking pad where Monica and Chandler lived brought us some classic TV moments.

The cool exposed brick walls, the wacky purple paint job and all the quirky ephemera on the walls, who wouldn’t want to live there?

But if you ever imagined of living in that apartment, in a cool New York neighbourhood and hanging out with a bunch of mates like Ross, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey and Co, then forget those dreams right now.

While it might have seemed attainable to live somewhere like that, Chandler and Monica must have been on far more wedge than we first thought to afford a place like that in Greenwich Village. You’d never be able to afford it in a million years.

You can see the true size of it on the day they moved out on Friends’ tearful final episode…

Which? Mortgage Advisors have priced up what Monica and Chandler’s place at Apt. 20. 495 Grove Street, New York City and it ain’t cheap.

For a two bedroom, open plan apartment in the sought-after Greenwich Village are, complete with a balcony/roof terrace overlooking Manhattan, it would set you back an eye-watering $4m – or £3.08 million in real money.

Now if you’re wondering what a deposit on that kind of place would be, slapping a meagre 10 per cent down would cost you £308,000 or ($400,000).

None of us are probably going to be moving into anywhere like that any time soon.

Which? produced a full infographic of the top 10 most famous homes from TV and film – including the iconic residences from The Simpsons, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Breaking Bad and even Tony Montana’s ludicrous Florida home from Scarface.
